Adventure by Motorcycle

We’re just as excited for peak riding season as you are. When it’s time to get your bike out of storage and ready for adventure, use this handy checklist to stay safe on the road.

Fuel system

Once your bike is out of storage, the first thing you’ll need to check is the fuel system. Look for any cracks or leaks from the tank, lines, or fittings. Open the filler cap and look inside for buildup. If you used a fuel stabilizer and your fuel is not a smooth consistency, drain the tank and fuel lines before running the engine.

Oil & fluids

Most manufacturers recommend an oil change after winter storage. Even if you changed it before, there is still a chance oil can separate and cause harmful condensation build-up. Also, check the fluid hose connections for looseness, cracks, or leakage. Replace parts as needed. Old antifreeze should be flushed and replaced with the proper coolant. The air filter should be replaced as well.

Battery

If you removed the battery and kept it charged during winter storage, you’ll need to clean the cables and terminals with a wire brush before greasing and reconnecting. If you kept your battery hooked up to a tender or a trickle charger, it’s likely your battery is in good shape. Either way, you should check the leads for corrosion and make sure they’re securely attached along with the vent tube.

Brake

Examine the brake lines and brake fluid levels. The lines should be free of cracks and leaks while the fluid should be clean and properly filled. Check the brake pads and discs for signs of wear and tear. If they look thin, replace them. Clean the rotors thoroughly with proper cleaner and lubricate the front brake hand lever and throttle cables.

Electric

Test your switches, lights, and gauges. Your headlamps (regular and high beam), brake lights, turn signals, and horn should all be in working order. If you’re unsure of their condition, get your bike towed to the nearest professional repair shop. Once you have completed an entire inspection, review your Progressive insurance policy and cover everything you need before you rev up your engine. Happy riding!
