Adventure by Boat

We know you’re itching to get back out on the water. Before you embark, make sure your ship is in tip-top shape after a season of storage. Use this as a checklist to get your vessel fully prepared for its next voyage.

Check the engine

Any boating expert will tell you that the first thing to check is the engine. Change the oil and switch out the oil filter. Inspect the outdrive so it is ready for the season. Add the correct oil additive to keep your engine clean and free of corrosion. You’ll also want to check your cables and hoses for wear and tear. Make sure they remained tight and secure. Use a battery tester to measure the volts and amps of your boat battery to ensure a reliable charge. Replace the battery if necessary and clean any debris or corrosion from the terminal before attaching it. All parts should be properly tested on the trailer before they’re tested in the water.

Refill the cooling system

Before your boat is stored, you should drain the cooling system to prevent the coolant line from freezing. When taking it out of storage, check the cooling system hoses and rubber impeller for holes or cracks and empty the strainer. Once everything looks good, it’s time to refill the system.

Inspect the exterior

Check the outside of your boat for any damage like cracks, missing pieces, or gouges. Even if it was in perfect condition going into storage, it’s always good to double-check and make sure nothing went awry during the winter months.

Check the safety gear

Safety is one of the most important steps in preparing your boat for the season. All safety equipment should be up to date. Read expiration dates on fire extinguishers and test all lights and signaling equipment like horns. You should also check the amount of flotation devices on board to ensure every passenger has one available.
