Coast to coast: Northeast

We’ll start our epic road trip by setting up camp in Acadia National Park, one of the most popular National Parks in the country for good reason. There are lighthouses to see, mountains to hike, tidepools to explore, and beaches to unwind. Drive your RV among the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands and set up camp along the Atlantic coastline. Make sure you reserve your campsite well in advance as reservations fill up six months prior to the date of interest. Boondockers and tent campers will love Blackwoods and Seawall Campgrounds on Desert Island, the main island of the park. Hop on your motorcycle and ride one of the most beautiful scenic byways in the country. The Acadia All-American Road meanders over the bridge to Mont Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park. The road will take you to pristine beaches and natural wonders. Stop and shop in Bar Harbor or ride to the top of Cadillac Mountain before dawn to witness the first sunrise in the country. There’s something for every rider on this unforgettable road.

Jericho Mountain State Park is an off-roading heaven. The lake-side escape has over 50 miles of trail riding for ATV, UTV, trail bike, and snowmobiles. From the scenic lookouts peppered throughout the trails, off-roaders are treated to sweeping views of Lake Jericho and the White Mountains. Every August, this off-roading destination becomes the heart of the “Journey to Jericho” off-roading celebration. The event ties together over 1,000 miles of interconnected trails passing through ATV-friendly towns with good restaurants and exciting daily events. If you don’t have an ORV, you can rent one locally or reserve a campsite and enjoy swimming and hiking throughout the park.

The Kancamagus Scenic Byway is one of the most iconic rides in the Northeast, especially when it explodes with color during peak fall foliage. The twists and turns of the 34.5-mile highway carve through the White Mountains of New Hampshire reaching elevations of almost 3,00 feet at Mt. Kancamagus. You’ll pass scenic waterfalls and breathtaking views while forgetting the hustle and bustle of the modern world as the gas stations, restaurants, and hotels are left at both ends of the highway for ride through a forest almost untouched. So, gas up your motorcycle, RV, or anything in between and enjoy the best part of a road trip — the open road.

After your scenic ride, throttle over to Laconia, NH. This destination is home to the oldest motorcycle rally in the world. With over 101 years of rider tradition, it boasts some of the best rides through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Luckily, this town isn’t just for riders. Laconia sits on a chain of lakes surrounded by mountains and connecting to Lake Winnipesauke. It’s the perfect town to launch or rent a boat and explore every nook and cranny of the glacial lakes.

A stop in Southwick, Massachusetts won’t have all the bells and whistles that a stop in Boston would, but it will have plenty of sand and speed. Southwick is home to The Wick 338, the most famous sandbox in American Motocross. Its unique sand terrain with a deceptively hard base makes for exciting races with unpredictable results. Their schedule boasts racing events March through December with the Pro Motocross Southwick National Championship on July 11^th. It's the perfect pit stop for a sandy celebration of all things Motocross.

Head on down to picturesque Newport, Rhode Island. This town centers around the yacht-filled harbor which hosts exciting sailing regatta races throughout the year. For a day trip on the water, launch your boat at Fort Adams State Park or hop on a ferry and head to Block Island. Known as the “Bermuda of the North,” this island is lined with 17 miles of sandy beach peppered with seafood restaurants and endless ocean views. If relaxing on the beach isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other adventurous activities including horseback riding, hiking, birdwatching, snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking with equipment rentals throughout the island.

From Block Island, hop on your boat and motor over to Norwalk, CT. This seaside town is made of distinct neighborhoods to explore and is a quick jump from New York City. In Norwalk, you can stroll along the shoreline, dine at some of the best restaurants in Connecticut, explore a historic mansion, and visit the local aquarium. If you catch yourself anchoring at Norwalk during September, you’ll be lucky enough to catch the Norwalk Boat Show — the only in-water boat show in the Northeast. This boat show is the perfect place to take boater safety courses, peruse the latest boat upgrades, and find your dream boat.

This off-roading hub has something for everyone looking for adventure. Explore the endless, ever-changing terrain that’ll take you over rocky climbs, around dirt tracks, and splashing through overflowing streams. With a slew of off-road parks nearby, any level of rider can find their own slice of earth to conquer. Alvin’s Off-Road Playground, in the heart of the Poconos, offers beginner to intermediate level ATV trails and tracks emphasizing a family-friendly destination with rentals available. Just 25 minutes north of the Pocono Mountains, you’ll find Lost Trails ATV Adventure Park with 2,000 acres of technical trails, sweeping views of the mountains, and a guided tour option. An hour’s drive from the Poconos will take you to 8,00 acres of trails at Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) which was named one of the top 10 off-roading destinations in the country. The last stop on the Northeast tour will land us at the gooey chocolate center of the country. Eat your heart out at Hersheypark, the largest amusement park in Pennsylvania.
